One of the great paintings of the world and certainly one of the most beloved, The Luncheon of the Boating Party engages the apathetic with its charm and disarms the cynical with its pictorial brilliance. Auguste Renoir's invitation to the viewer to imbibe vicariously the ebullient spirits of his friends gathered on the terrace of the Cafe Foumaise is irresistible. The scene is readily understood: appetites grown healthy from rowing on the Seine have been sated; flirtatious glances, emboldened by wine, connect this group of artists and models together; we suspend our disbelief in the perfection of such a moment, and bask in the spring sun of Paris and in the languourous camaraderie of friends.
